A couple of weekends ago I was thrilled to be able to attend TEDx Omaha and hear some amazing speakers share their stories, their views of the world, and their hopes for the future. The theme of Tedx Omaha this year was "Everything Changes", and the various ways these speakers chose to approach that theme was interesting. Some spoke about life experiences that forever changed them. Some spoke about how our societies have evolved and are continuing to change. Some spoke about changes that have not yet come about but that they hope to see.
One thing they all had in common, whether they thought about it intentionally or not, was talking about what holds back change. As each of them shared their message, there were elements of fear, uncertainty and doubt. Either for the future, or that they had to overcome to get where they are now.
It made me think about how much fear, uncertainty and doubt is creeping into our daily conversations and interactions lately. I see this at the personal and family level, community level, country level and globally. And for many, the response to this fear, uncertainty and doubt has been to retreat. To back into our corners of "rightness" or "knowing" and wait for the day when the other 80% comes to their senses. It almost feels like heading to the basement in a tornado waiting for it to blow over.
At Tedx Omaha though, the speakers spoke openly. They shared from their own experiences and hearts what they felt needed to be heard. I wish the videos were up already because I would share with you Sumeet Jain's talk on privilege and racism. It was probably the most powerful talk of the day!
Since the videos are not up though, I will share with you one of the videos they showed at the event: Rabbi Jonathan Sacks's talk on "How we can face the future without fear, together". There were so many ah-ha's in here for me! It's true that change is a constant, but does that have to come with a healthy dose of fear, uncertainty and doubt? Rabbi Sacks shows us how it doesn't have to.
